About This Place

Located in the heart of Chicago’s vibrant Pilsen neighborhood, The Jibarito Stop invites you on an immersive journey through authentic Puerto Rican flavors served with a modern twist. Specializing in traditional Puerto Rican and sandwich shop fare, this cozy eatery is a culinary gem that beautifully honors its heritage with an array of mouthwatering dishes guaranteed to satisfy your craving for bold, tropical tastes.

The star of the menu is unquestionably the Jibarito—a signature sandwich crafted with flattened, crispy fried plantains in place of bread, delivering a perfect balance of crunch and softness. Whether you opt for the classic Jibarito with Steak, the hearty Chicken Jibarito Full, or the indulgent Jibarito with Shrimp Empanadas, each bite bursts with savory richness and vibrant island spices. Dive deeper into comforting Puerto Rican comfort food with highlights like the Roasted Pork Mofongo, a garlicky, mashed plantain dish pocked with tender pork and served alongside rice and crisp salad, or the Beef Empanadas, which boast a perfectly crispy exterior encasing a juicy, seasoned filling.

For those seeking lighter fare, the Plantain Salad is a refreshing choice — crisp lettuce, ripe avocado, and sweet plantains come together to create a melody of textures and flavors, available with a protein option like chicken or steak to add extra heartiness. Delectable fritters, including the shrimp-packed Shrimp Empanada and distinctive Alcapurria Fritter made from green bananas and yucca stuffed with cheesy beef, offer tempting handheld bites perfect for sharing or savoring on the go.

What truly sets The Jibarito Stop apart is its thoughtful, inclusive vibe — a passion visible in their recently introduced Vegan Menu. Plant-based diners rave about the Vegan Empanada Basket and other meat-free options that don’t compromise on the bold Puerto Rican flavors the restaurant is celebrated for. It’s a rare find in the city, allowing everyone to partake in the rich culinary tradition with ease.

Stepping inside, you’re enveloped in an inviting, island-inspired ambiance that immediately transports you to Puerto Rico’s sunny shores. The friendly staff adds warmth and genuine hospitality, enhancing the dining experience even during the bustling lunch hours. Although weekday crowds can make wait times a little longer, regulars agree the exquisite quality and generous portions are well worth the short wait.

Customers consistently praise the food’s authentic taste and value, with comments like “the empanadas are on point” and “the full Jibarito steak sandwich is a deep-fried pocket of deliciousness.” The mix of traditional and creative dishes, paired with a reasonable price point, makes The Jibarito Stop a beloved destination for both Puerto Rican food enthusiasts and first-time adventurers alike.

If your palate craves the creamy sweetness of Flan or the nostalgic fizz of a Kola Champagne, be sure to save room for dessert and drinks that round out this delightful culinary experience. Whether you’re looking for a hearty meal, a vegan adventure, or an authentic taste of Puerto Rican street food, The Jibarito Stop stands as a must-visit highlight on Chicago’s food scene.

It was delish. I have tried many Puerto Rican restaurants in the Chicago area even the northwest Indiana area. The food was extremely good and at a decent price. Did not break the bank coming here

The Jibarito Shop is a gem of a place in Pilsen in Chicago. Street parking was plenty on a weekday afternoon and staff really friendly. I ordered the full/ grande Jibarito steak sandwich, a spicy beef empanada, chicken fritter and a Mexican Coke. The empanada is a deep-fried pocket of deliciousness and had just the right amount of spice and a great amount beef. The orange dipping sauce elevates the flavor and taste. After scarfing down the empanada, I split open the fritter to also find a tasty treat of minced chicken and potato. The "sandwich" was a bit disappointing with the bread to filling ratio as I thought it came with plantains and rice. My mistake but it was good, just not that great of a steak sandwich. Will have to specifically order the "Jibaritos with Rice" and not Bread Sandwich next trip. All in all Jibarito Shop delivered a great 4 star meal.

This has been one of my FAVORITE Puerto Rican restaurants for YEARS, but recently they added a VEGAN MENU!!!! Yes - VEGAN PUERTO RICAN FOOD and it’s SO GOOD!!! Since I don’t eat pork or beef, I tend to miss out on some of my Puerto Rican foods that I used to love but what they offer?!? I forgot that I wasn’t eating meat! The STK Mofongo was heavenly! Those plantain mash with all the flavors and seasonings, all the garlic - my goodness!!!! The vegan appetizers were super good too!!! The empanada was my favorite- cheese, sweet plantains and “beef.” I could eat a whole basket of them! And of course I had to get a chicken jibarito bc it’s one of my favorite foods! Their chicken is so well seasoned and moist! If you want AUTHENTIC Puerto Rican food with some CRAZY GOOD VEGAN PUERTO RICAN FOOD options - get here and tell em that Bri from Planes and Plates sent you!

The food was delicious. It was hot. It was tasty. The empanadas are on point. they are very busy on Friday afternoon around lunch hours so it might take a long time for your food to come, but it's worth the wait.

Oh wow, The Jibarito Stop is one stop I would make on a weekly basis! The food her on par with any Puerto Rican shop in the city! Quality is definitely what TJS is known for in my book! The service on the other hand was pretty slow but, the quality of the food made up for that. The atmosphere made me think about being in an island space. If you wanna make that stop make it to The Jibarito Stop!

I had a Jibarito with rice. It was delicious and reasonably priced. I loved it. The portion size was good. Great value for money. The wait time was around 15-20 mins.

This is a solid counter-order spot on Pilsen’s 18th St. serving flavorful, garlicky jibaritos, plates, etc. It wasn’t too crowded for a Saturday lunch, but most of the tables were full. The inside ambience is chill and relaxed. I ordered the Vegan Steak Mofongo Plate and Full Chicken Jibarito to share with one other person, and it was a hefty amount of food that left us both quite full and satisfied. Both tasted flavorful, but overly salty, as we were both extremely thirsty afterwards. And although I’m normally a huge fan of garlic, I must say that the garlic flavor in both dishes was a bit overpowering. I personally liked the Vegan Steak Mofongo Plate better, as it had a more eclectic mix of textures and flavors, from the delicious beans mixed in rice to the vegan steak and soft, garlicky mash exterior. The jibarito was similarly flavorful but difficult to consume cohesively in one piece. The prices are pretty fair, especially for the portion sizes. Although I didn’t love how salty and overly garlicky the food was, it did hit the spot overall and I would love come back to try the other items on the menu. — Price (relative to peers): 4.5/5 Food: 4/5 Ambience: 4.5/5 Service: 4.5/5 (quick and friendly ordering and service) Overall Value: 4/5
